Reduce, Reuse & Recycle your Water…

Posted by: Watergirl Chatter on: November 19, 2010

What can you do to help conserve water?

I was surprised to learn that Canada is one of the world’s largest consumers of water per capita, only surpassed by the United States.  As a parent, it made me think, what can we do as a family to help conserve water?   The old Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle method can also be used on our water consumption.

  • Turning off all taps, if you’re not using them;
  • Fixing leaky faucets;
  • Buy appliances which reuse some of the waste water;
  • Instead of letting laundry waste water go down the sink, save it to water your plants, same can be done with leftover teas and juices;
  • Collecting rain water to water your lawn & garden, and to use for bathing and washing your car;

The main thing is be creative, and think… do I need to be using this much water, and how can I use it again?

Why use treated water?
Treating your water as it enters into your home removes any hardness (mainly calcium buildup) from the water.  This means that you, as the consumer, will use less soap, lotions, and other harsh chemicals, and therefore the waste water you send back into the environment is much cleaner than most people’s waste water.  Anyone can get treated water; a simple in-home water test can determine the hardness of your water.

So start today -  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and find ways to use less cleaning products.  These are all simple ways to do your part in helping to conserve the world’s water supply.
